Cray is fortunate to have earned the recognition and loyalty of customers worldwide. We’re also honored to receive industry recognition, as is the case with two recent reports from industry analyst firms Forrester and Gartner, the top research and advisory firms providing IT-related insights.
Forrester notes Cray’s commitment to analytics
The recognition from Forrester comes on the heels of Cray’s highly anticipated launch of the first agile analytics platform, the Cray® Urika®-GX system.
The Forrester Wave™: Big Data Hadoop Optimized Systems, Q2 2016 report, named Cray a “Strong Performer.” In the report, Forrester defines Hadoop®-optimized systems as:
Preconfigured hardware platforms comprising CPU, memory, and/or disk that are optimized to run a Hadoop distribution, which includes value-added tools, Hadoop ecosystem software, and/ or add-ons appropriate for use by enterprises.
What we feel is interesting about this new Wave is that it is the first we have seen that deeply explores this new market. As Forrester puts it, “[a]lthough this is a relatively new market, it promises to gain significant traction in the coming years as enterprises look to accelerate and scale big data deployments.”
The authors of the report, Forrester analysts Mike Gualtieri and Noel Yuhanna, state, “Cray brings its high-performance computing experience to Hadoop. When it comes to supercomputers, Cray is a brand that has been around for more than 40 years, and this tradition and experience is now making its way into big data architectures.”
The report continues: “Cray’s strong high-performance computing history, good technical support, and continued focus and commitment to analytics and big data will appeal to a larger audience in the coming years.”
We believe this recognition of the Urika platform reinforces our leadership position in providing customers with a powerful tool for solving the most advanced analytics challenges. Shortly after the publication of this Wave, Cray launched the Urika-GX system. The timing of the report was exciting to us.
Gartner again recognizes Cray as a niche player in modular servers
In addition to the newly created Forrester Wave: Big Data Hadoop Optimized Systems, Q2 2016 report, Cray was recently included in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Modular Servers. The Magic Quadrant provides a qualitative analysis into a market and its direction, maturity and participants. Gartner’s May 2016 report recognized Cray for the second consecutive year. Gartner defines the modular server as “A class of server with modular compute capabilities housed in a common chassis or enclosure.” Gartner evaluated Cray’s computing products, the Cray® XC™ and Cray® CS™ series supercomputers.
